What is a Malware Scam?

A malware scam is a type of cyber fraud where scammers trick victims into downloading harmful software (malware) onto their phones or computers. This malware can secretly steal personal data, banking information, or give scammers full control of your device.

How to spot a Malware Scam? (Common Warning Signs)

  1. You receive a message or email with a suspicious link or file to download.
  2. The message may claim you’ve won a prize, missed a delivery, or need to verify your account.
  3. The link directs you to download an application or APK file outside of official application stores.
  4. Your phone starts acting strangely such as fast battery drain, appearance of unknown apps, or unusual behaviour in your banking applications.

How to prevent Malware Scams?

  1. Never click on suspicious links from SMS, email, or WhatsApp especially from unknown senders.
  2. Only install apps from official application stores like Google Play or Apple App Store.
  3. Avoid downloading APK files or applications sent via links.
  4. Use antivirus software and keep your phone’s operating system up to date.
  5. Be cautious of messages urging you to act quickly as scammers create urgency to make you panic.

Example of Malware Scam Scenario:

Lina received an SMS saying her parcel couldn’t be delivered and asked her to click a link to “track” the package. The link led her to download an application. After installing it, her phone became slow, and her bank account was emptied the next day. The application she downloaded was actually malware that recorded her banking login details.

What Went Wrong:

  1. Lina trusted a suspicious message without verifying it.
  2. She downloaded an application from an unknown source.
  3. Her banking information was exposed through the malware.

Lesson Learned:

  • Always be careful with messages that ask you to download applications or click links.
  • Avoid installing applications from outside official application stores.
  • A real company will never ask you to download an application through SMS or WhatsApp.
  • Stay alert. One click can lead to major losses.
